What Giving Supports

Giving supports the mission of the church to glorify God by making disciples (Matthew 28:18–20). Your generosity helps advance the gospel through preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17–18), caring for those in need (Acts 4:34–35; James 1:27), supporting missionaries and ministry work (Philippians 4:15–17), and building up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11–12).

Why Do We Give?

We give because God first gave to us. Giving is a response to the grace we have received in Christ, who “though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). It is not a duty we perform but an act of worship that flows from a heart changed by the gospel.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Our giving reveals what we truly value. When we give toward the work of God’s kingdom, we are putting our treasure where it will outlast everything this world offers (Matthew 6:19–20).

What is the Right Attitude in Giving?

God is concerned with the heart behind the gift, not the size of it. Paul makes this plain: “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Giving should never be driven by guilt, pressure, or manipulation. It should be willing, purposeful, and joyful.

The Macedonian churches are a powerful example. Though in deep poverty themselves, they gave beyond their means, and they did so willingly, even begging for the opportunity to participate. Paul tells us that the reason for this generosity was that “they first gave themselves to the Lord” (2 Corinthians 8:1–5). Their giving was not the product of external pressure but of hearts that belonged to Christ.

We give not to fund an institution but to faithfully steward what God has entrusted to us, for His glory and the good of others (2 Corinthians 9:6–8). We give not to earn God’s favor but because we have already received it. And we trust that God, who supplies seed to the sower, will supply and multiply what is needed for every good work (2 Corinthians 9:10–11).
